A day in the life
The alarm goes off but that’s not a surprise. The sun rose
long before then.
My bottle of two-in-one is a welcomed ally in the narrow
corridor of the shower.
The sound of fresh squeezed orange juice meets me as I step out into
the steam.
Choosing what to wear was limited by my packed suitcase two months
ago but I’m not complaining.
Ninos, desayunos
Sweet words from a sweeter lady.
She cooks for us.
She cleans for us.
She cares for us.
She laughs and talks with us.
Simply put, she blesses us.
Jamón and cheese on toasted bread with olive oil coupled with tea and zumo.
The time shows a certain number and that means it’s time to
go.
Off into the rush of the city
A packed metro makes for awkward touching yet the normalcy is
all too understood.
Hospital Clinic
Diagonal
Swarm out
Up the stairs
Through the corridor
Down the stairs to the green line
First, Passeig de Grácia
Then, Cataluyna
Swarm out
Up the stairs
Out the station
Up the escalator
Out into the open air
The morning air is crisp and the people look all too busy,
all too American.
The thought of sitting in class all day looms over me.
If class is canceled for bad weather, why can’t it be
canceled for good weather?
Fall shows itself as the sun shines proudly through the
trees as the faint crunch of leaves compliments the majestic colors of their companions in the sky.
One class and then another class
Hopefully there’s time to get lunch
Who am I kidding, there’s always time to eat
Spanish class is next
My ability to understand improves everyday
My ability to speak seems to vanish the moment I try
The thoughts are there but their Spanish equivalents are not
3:15pm comes at the same time each day
Now what to do?
Homework would be wise
But exploring would be fun
Conversations could be had
Just as memories should be made
The night is quickly upon the city as the sun tucks itself
behind the buildings
Day is done. Gone the sun.
Night arrives. Beauty too.
The city at night is not so much different as much as it is
authentic.
People are still walking and talking
Children are playing
Students are happy to be done with school for the day
Dogs are out and about
And there I am, finding myself in Barcelona
The elevator takes me to the fourth floor
The key turns to open the door
¡Hola!
Hola, ¿Todos bien?
Si, bien, muy bien
Time slowly passes as I prepare to hear some of my favorite
words
Ninos, la cena
Another truly authentic Spanish meal finds its way into our
stomachs
Fresh fruit for dessert leaves me feeling refreshed and
satisfied
Now for some homework and then for some sleep
A day in the life is complete as I find myself falling
asleep to a dream I can’t wait to wake up to
